What: A study session is a 5-day course, designed with the support of the Council of Europe’s Youth Department. Study sessions depart from traditional courses by using non- formal education to encourage participants to share their experiences, stories and expertise on a given issue. As a participant in a study session, you are an expert based in your experience as a volunteer, professional or student and will be encouraged to share your insights with colleagues from across Europe.
This will be the tenth in a series of study sessions led by FEANTSA Youth. Our study sessions have provided an opportunity for young professionals from across Europe to come together to identify key issues in tackling youth homelessness and co-develop a series of solutions.
The specific needs of young people with migrant or minority ethnic backgrounds have come up in discussions during previous study sessions, but have never been the main theme. The homeless population, including among young people, is increasingly diverse in terms of cultural and/or migration backgrounds, and is expected to be more so in the near future. It will therefore be crucial for organisations to develop intercultural competences within services, so as they are more accessible, inclusive, and culturally sensitive.
With this study session, we aim to equip young professionals in homeless service providers with the competencies to improve their work with young people from a migrant and/or minority ethnic background. To reach this aim, the following objectives are set:
- Understand the specificities of supporting young migrant, minority ethnic, or racialised people in homelessness.
- Identify the value and impact of intercultural learning and competencies in the social work with young people in homelessness from migrant or minority ethnic background.
- Share inspiring examples from services that have adopted anti-discrimination policies and that have promoted intercultural dialogue among their users.
- Map out challenges and draft a plan for how to make homeless service providers more inclusive with young people from migrant or minority ethnic background.
- Enhance participants’ ability to improve intercultural competencies in their workplaces and to advocate for more inclusive local communities.
Who Should Apply:
- Under 30 years old; only a small portion of places are available for people over 30.
- Living in a Council of Europe member state.
- Persons working with young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness; or persons who have experienced homelessness.
- Persons working to promote the rights of young people from a migrant and/or minority ethnic background, even though not experiencing homelessness.
- Able to communicate in English. A proficient level is not required, but a good understanding is, in order to actively participate in group discussions.
- Enthusiastic, energetic, and prepared to engage in non-formal education.
- Willing to commit yourself after the study session in order to share your learnings in your local context.
Applications are particularly encouraged from people with accessibility, learning, or other needs. The European Youth Centre can work to accommodate for these; you can provide more information in the application form.
